Band Story
Phil Circle: A Genre-Defying Force in Chicago's Music Scene
Phil Circle isn't your typical singer-songwriter. While many artists in the genre stick to familiar acoustic patterns, Circle breaks the mold by blending elements of jazz, blues, alternative, and classical music into a style uniquely his own. His dynamic live performances further set him apart, delivering an energy that defies the expectations often associated with solo acoustic acts.
Circle's musical journey began over a decade ago in the Chicago area, following a three-year stint performing in New Mexico and the Southwest. He holds a degree in Music Composition from Columbia College, where he studied under jazz legend William Russo, blues icon Corky Siegel, and classical guitar virtuoso Norman Ruiz.
After achieving significant success with the rock band Guilty, Circle embarked on a solo career. In 2003, he collaborated with renowned blues fiddler Ruby Harris to release the live acoustic album Live at the Gateway. Subsequently, he joined forces with Lem Roby, frontman of Jack Salamander, and multi-instrumentalist Mark Lester of Labrador Dali to form his current band lineup. Ruby Harris and other top local talents frequently make guest appearances with the group.
With eight releases to his name—three of which have become collectors' items—Circle's music has reached audiences worldwide, from performances for Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama to airplay on radio stations in Belgium, Argentina, and Japan. He's been featured on Fox Radio, NBC, and in major print media, and has performed at iconic venues like Chicago's Double Door, Schubas, and Martyrs, as well as CBGB in New York City.
Beyond performing, Circle is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of musicians through private voice and guitar lessons. He's also an accomplished session guitarist and producer. In 2006, he expanded his artistic repertoire by studying acting at The Chicago Actors Studio, earning lead roles in three critically acclaimed stage plays and a Best Actor nomination from the Chicago Actors Studio for his third role.
As he continues to write, record, and tour, Phil Circle remains a dynamic and influential figure in the music world, constantly evolving and challenging the boundaries of genre and performance.
