Band Story

For the past two years, Sarah has been pouring her heart and soul into a new album project. Now that it’s nearing completion, she speaks candidly about the journey in her own words.

“Life and the myriad of circumstances that go along with it...”

This has been a long process. It has taken us almost two years to gather everything we needed. Over the course of that time, as always, life changed along with it. If the inner work is great, the outer work will be great. I don’t just mean this in reference to my own life. So many people have put time, effort, and love into this project and into this music. It has come together because people were willing to make sacrifices on behalf of what we do. I am forever grateful to them.

Music that has meaning doesn’t happen with just one person—it happens with many. The quality of the people involved is reflected in the end result. I think the differences on this album speak for themselves.

Along the way, this journey has been shaped by life and all the circumstances that come with it. We have seen a lot. We’ve experienced both birth and death. I believe these are the kinds of experiences that ultimately define us. Bringing these moments to light—to let them manifest without being overwhelmed—is essential.

I considered it all difficult. I considered it fun. And I consider myself, through it all and as much as I could be myself, very lucky.

“Music that has meaning does not happen with just one person. It happens with many.”

I want to talk about the people I’ve met along the way—those who shared themselves for this record. It could take a year to thank them all properly, so I’ll try to be brief.

I have to begin with my producer, David Baron, because everything starts and ends with him. David has not only produced this album, but also worn every hat needed to complete it and make it everything it should be. He’s been the cheerleader, the organizer, the all-in-one musician, the tough voice of reason, and the person who’s told me every day to fight for what I believe is right—and not to be swayed by the wishes of others. He has taught me what it means to be a musician and, more importantly, he’s been a mentor in the human aspects of this journey, which are so often forgotten.

I have to mention some of the musicians, too. We were lucky enough to work with Josh Freese, a drummer who breathes life into everything he plays. At first, I didn’t believe it would be possible to work with him, but I’ve learned that if you don’t try, you’ll never know what’s possible. I met him—through a series of symbolic events—at a NIN/Bauhaus show. Not knowing who he was, I saw him backstage before the show, at the bottom of a hill, and immediately sensed that he was a good human being—happy in the truest sense and undeniably selfless. When I saw him play, I was blown away, along with thousands of others. He’s someone who simply loves to play music. It’s absolutely pure.

Jerry Marotta, another incredible drummer, also plays on the record. His style is very different, but he can set a groove like a captain steering a ship—effortless and precise. I didn’t meet Jerry until later in the process. He lives in Woodstock, where we’ve done most of the recording. In just one day, he elevated the music and expanded the sonic landscape of everything that had come before.

I also want to mention Tony Levin, the one and only. I won’t say much because he’s an incredibly humble person, but I will say he was deeply inspiring—truly one of a kind.

I could go on forever—cellists, oboists, string players, guitarists, percussionists... My only regret is not having enough time to look everyone in the eye and say, “Thank you.”

When asked what to expect from this record, I would say: don’t expect anything. The conversations in life that unfold have a life of their own. Listen carefully to them.
