Band Story

From sensitive to soaring, JoAnne Redding’s vocals shine like a multi-faceted gem. Her songs are a soulful mix of self-penned roots music—blues, country, and rock 'n' soul—that resonate with her own life experiences.

Redding’s current CD, How It Is, spent three months in the Top Ten of Roots Music Report’s Blues Chart. One of the tracks, “I’ve Earned the Right (to Sing the Blues),” was featured on a compilation CD distributed by the national magazine Blues Revue. She was honored to perform another song from that album, her poignant piece about older child adoption titled “A Family to Love,” at the Rhode Island State House on National Adoption Day.

A former Americana radio program director and morning show host, Redding has been a guest speaker for the Connecticut Songwriters Association and appeared on radio and television throughout the United States. Her debut CD, Run With It, recorded in Nashville, gained her international airplay and distribution. Her 2000 follow-up album, The Running Kind, was played on over 250 radio stations worldwide. The title track was featured on the daytime drama All My Children, and her song “Pink Slip Blues” aired on the syndicated personal finance show Sound Money. The song “Everything,” also from The Running Kind, was featured in the independent film Moving McAllister, starring Ben Gourley, Mila Kunis (That ’70s Show), Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite), and Rutger Hauer.

Redding’s talent spans genres. She has shared the bill with major country acts including Asleep at the Wheel, The Mavericks, and Hank Williams Jr. She's also performed with two of her Texas blues heroes: Lee Roy Parnell invited her on stage to sing with him after hearing her opening set—an invitation he repeated in 2006 at a New York State venue. Sharing the stage with Delbert McClinton was another career highlight.

On the folk side, Redding is a regular performer at The Guthrie Center—Arlo Guthrie’s venue of Alice’s Restaurant fame—and she was selected from over 400 applicants to showcase at the renowned Falcon Ridge Folk Festival. Her spiritual vocals have lifted church rafters, whether singing solo a cappella or backed by full choirs and instrumental ensembles.

Regardless of genre, JoAnne Redding connects with audiences through gut-level honesty. “I sing what I feel, and I feel what I sing,” she says. “That’s what it’s all about. If I can make somebody feel something—unearth some true emotion—then I’m a happy woman.”

JoAnne Redding is a spirited performer who has appeared from New Orleans to New England.
